Oh Catrina is a charming video slot released in May of 2016 by Malta-based software provider Booming Games. The game draws inspiration from the Mexican Day of the Dead celebration, with many decorates skulls filling the reels, while Catrina calmly watches from the sides. Despite obviously looping, the soundtrack is still really catchy, and paired with some awesome graphics and some of the best animations we have seen this developer do so far, it all makes for a great looking title, with some gameplay problems.
The RTP for Oh Catrina is 95.47%, which is average for video slots, pairs well with the medium volatility of the title. Our main issue falls with the bonuses, which feel a touch uninspired. The game only offers expanding symbols and a free spins special feature, which can lead players to a solid jackpot worth 5,000x their total bet.
We love the visuals on offer here. The reels are covered by blooming gold and red flowers, and the background image of a quiet, lovely Mexican town looks engrossing, although the reels get in the way of the best part, which is the road leading up to the rest of the village. Symbols include a sepia picture of a couple, a bottle of booze with three glasses, several sewn window covers depicting skeletons doing various activities and three colorfully decorated skulls.
Special symbols include lit candles with a skull drawn on them as the Wild, which replaces all symbols except for Scatters, and a large red flower as the Scatter, used to activate the free spins bonus.
When you have three of the same icon, or two, in the specific case of the skulls, in adjacent reels, following one of the paylines, from left to right, a win for that specific icon is awarded to the player.
This game has fifteen flexible paylines, which means players can choose to turn some of them on or off at will. Turning off active paylines and lowering or increase the total bet allows gamblers to set their wagers between $0.01 up to $450 per spin.
You can choose to play up to 100 auto spins, which allows you to forgo manually pressing the spin button. You can stop the Autospin feature early, if you need to.
The first bonus available to gamblers will be the free spins special feature. Collecting three or more Scatters rewards ten free spins, with the potential of winning ten more free spins by collecting three or more Scatters again while the feature is already active. There is no limit on how many times the free spins can be retriggered.
Also during free spins, players will randomly choose which icon will become their expanding symbol. While the bonus is active, if players collect three or more of that symbol, it will expand to cover the reel it is currently occupying, increasing the chances of forming a big win.
Oh Catrina is playable on mobile devices and desktop ones alike.
Despite the somewhat boring special features, the jackpot is too tempting to ignore. Everything else, from the visuals, the music that plays, the volatility and the RTP are all too good to pass up on.
