It is relatively rare to see one slot producer release two games in the same month, but rarer still to see two quality launches nearly side by side. Warlords: Crystals of Power releases in November 2016, nearly the same time as Secrets of Christmas that everyone believed was going to be NetEnt’s winter release.
But this has been one launch that really came out of nowhere. While NetEnt teased a winter surprise, we did not expect this one bit. Well done graphics, an interesting universe, and a wide array of bonus features as well as a tantalising prospect of being able to earn up to a million with luck. While 2016 has been a decent year for the publisher, they are finishing it off with a bang.
This slot features three sides locked in a conflict – a samurai, a priestess, and a Viking barbarian. The symbols in Warlords reflect this as well. There are three brackets of icons depending on how much they pay.
The lowest paying symbols are masks of a samurai, a priestess, or a Viking helmet. Middle bracket includes a wolf, a panther, and a boar. And the top paying icons include the Samurai, the Priestess, and the Viking.
And NetEnt’s winter release includes Wilds and Scatters to make things interesting. Wilds are the three crystals of power united in a golden circle, while Scatters are drawn as different coloured banners, representing each faction in the conflict.
The background for this game is nothing short of spectacular. You can see soldiers moving in the background, banners flying in the wind, and it all around evokes a feeling of getting ready for a gruesome battle. Paired with medieval sounding music, this is about as immersive as a slot gets.
You can play for as little as $0.15, up to $150. The lower range will make it more interesting for casual players who just want something new to spin and not spend too much. But while the upper limit of one million is tantalising, high rollers may be turned off by the lack of exciting wins outside of special features.
And speaking of special features, Warlords is full of them. First off, your Wilds have a chance of appearing and sticking to the reels randomly each turn. The Barbarian Hammer can award 4 Wilds in a square shape, the Priestess’ arrow will award between 2-5 Wilds on reels 1 to 5, and the Samurai sword will give you between 2-5 Wilds on reels 1 to 4.
Scatters in this game have different colours depending on which faction they represent. These Scatters will award you different rewards, and if you have several different colours on the reels, they will enter combat, with an even chance for either side to prevail and turn the loser to their colour.
You only need two Scatters of the same colour to activate the Respins bonus. There, you have a chance to get additional Scatters, and you only need one more to trigger the Free Spins bonus. If you do not get any more Scatters on the re-spin, you are given a final chance to score either a Scatter, or a cash prize.
What kind of Free Spins special you get depends on the colour of the Scatters that activated it. Barbarian Free Spins guarantee at least 9 free spins, and have the chance to increase.
The Samurai free spins gives you 5 free spins, and each Scatter gives you a guaranteed sticky Wild on the reel while it is active.
And finally, the Priestess bonus round will award you 7 free spins, and an increase in the multiplier for each additional Scatter.
The big wins come from the Free Spins bonuses, so you want to focus on them more than everything else in the game. While other wins are not bad, they just lack the meaningful punch to really push you into profit.
In our experience, the Priestess’ multiplier bonus was the best of the bunch, so see if you can’t score some of her specials.
The mobile version of the game is just as fun to play, and there are no glaring user interface issues as some slot makers seem to constantly create.
That said, some of the graphical charm has been lost in the transition. While that is sad, it is nothing too noticeable.
