The Legend

The Pied Piper of Hamelin is the title character of a legend from the town of Hamelin, which was illustrated by Arthur Rackham in 1934.

This old legend dates back to the Middle Ages referencing to a piper, dressed in multicolored “pied” clothing, who was in fact rat-catcher hired by the town to lure rats away with his magic pipe.

When town citizens refused to pay for his services, he led the children away playing the pipe as he had the rats to retaliate.
